Toyota created a legendary sports car with its famed AE86 – and the 2023 Toyota GR86 writes the next chapter of that legend with a chequered flag-winning combination of performance, power, styling, comfort, agility, responsiveness, and amenities. The 2023 GR86 was designed and engineered from the wheels up by the same team that powers our Toyota Gazoo Racing success on the motorsports world stage.

 

 

Circuit-ready credentials.

The 2023 GR86 expresses athletic driving fun, with GR-specific Functional MATRIX “G Mesh” Grille, aerodynamic front air dams and vents, angular LED headlights, and side sill spoilers. A low overall height and hip point plus fender tops that extend horizontally to the beltline combine to confer the stance distinctive of front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports cars. Meantime, the GR86’s low, horizontal underbody and narrow rear cabin impart a “launch-ready” appearance. The 2023 GR86’s low weight, ultra-low centre of gravity and balance combined to make for a pure driver’s car.

Inside, drivers will discover a cockpit designed to keep them squarely focussed on the pavement. Digital instrumentation features Normal, Sport, and Track modes and LCD toggle displays with silver trimmed dials. The leather trimmed steering wheel and leather wrapped parking brake handle and gearshift boot add refinement. All models features sport bucket front seats with side bolsters to firmly hold driver and navigator in place when cornering, while the 2+2 configuration offers additional versatility with fold-down rear seats.

 

 

A rush of exhilaration at every press of the pedal.

The 2023 GR86 built on the considerable credentials of the first-generation, ramping up affordable sports car fun with a new 2.4-litre flat-four boxer engine that delivers 228 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. Critically, the new engine is tuned so peak torque arrives far earlier in the powerband, at 3,700 RPM. The result is a more responsive and powerful driving experience in all situations.

This more powerful engine improves zero-to-100 km/h acceleration to 6.3 seconds for the 6-speed manual transmission, and to 6.8 seconds for the available 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with intelligence (ECT-i). Fuel economy comes in at a manufacturer-estimated fuel consumption of 11.9/8.7/10.5 L/100 km (city/highway/combined) for the manual transmission and 11.1/7.7/9.6 L/100 km (city/highway/combined) for the automatic.

Toyota’s D-4S dual injection, which combines direct fuel injection and port-injection technologies, provides a cooling effect in the cylinders to allow a very high 12.5:1 compression ratio for maximum power. The port fuel injectors come into play during light- and medium-load conditions to help maximize combustion efficiency.

Other performance-tuned features include a Torsen limited-slip rear differential, sport-tuned independent MacPherson strut front and double wishbone rear suspension engineering, and vented 295mm front and 290mm rear brakes.

Available with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions and limited to just 20 models in Canada, this exclusive sports coupe is built on the premium trim level. The 2023 GR86 10th Anniversary Special Edition will leave an unforgettable visual impression with its Solar Shift orange paint colour, which is exclusive to this model. A GR cat-back performance exhaust system with stainless steel pipes, black chrome tips and debossed GR logo ensures that the GR86 Special Edition will leave a deep, growling auditory signature in its wake. GR matte-black 18-inch wheels with black centre caps and black lug nuts with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, a black GR C-pillar graphic and Ultrasuede/leather trimmed interior with GR special edition badge accent the striking colour. Inside, special stitching accents the leather seating, leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather shift boot, while door trim moulding sports the special edition logo.

 

 

Driver-Focused Tech.

The 2023 GR86 also features a Smart Key System functions on both the driver and passenger door. A push-button start fires up a boxer-inspired GR-logo animation on its 7-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) cockpit multi-information display.

2023 GR86 Safety.

The 2023 GR86 automatic transmission model comes standard with an active safety system that includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Lane Departure Warning, Sway Warning, Lead Vehicle Start Alert and High Beam Assist.

Both grades are equipped with: Traction Control (TRAC),Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA); and Hill Start Assist Control (HAC). Additional safety features include rear seat LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children), a Backup Camera, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and a Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS). Seven airbags include a driver’s knee airbag.
